How are the decisions made about how much support my child will receive?

Support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is tailored to meet the needs of each individual's needs.

If you have concerns regarding your child, your first port of call is to speak directly to the class teacher to share and discuss your concerns. If the class teacher has concerns, they will speak to you directly, we value our approach of openness and honesty.

The support provided at South Wingfield is based on a graduated response.

1. SEN support (school- based support)

This is the first level of help provided within the school. It includes:

  • adaptive teaching methods
  • small groups or 1:1 interventions
  • additional resources or equipment  e.g. phonics mats, talk tins
  • regular monitoring and review of progress
  • pre learning

If the above measures have been put in place and progress is still not being made then the child may be put on an IEP (individual education plan). This is where the class teacher sets SMART targets to monitor and review the child's progress in their area (s) of difficulty. These targets are reviewed on a half-termly basis and shared with parents/carers.

If a child's needs are more complex and long-term, it may be decided that the child needs additional support by means of extra funding via either Derbyshire's Inclusion Funding or an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan). The aforementioned is decided upon as a collaborative decision by the class teacher, parens/carers and SENDCO.
