* Tapestry News *
As we are now coming to the end of the school year, it is time for us to close the Tapestry accounts for our current children in Class One and prepare new ones for our new starters. We hope that you have enjoyed using Tapestry and it has helped you to be part of your child's time in Class One. I will be creating pdf documents which include all of your child's observations. This pdf can then be downloaded from your personal Tapestry accounts and either printed or kept as a digital file. I have included a letter below which describes in more detail how to do this. Please contact me if you have any difficulties accessing the download for your child's Tapestry Learning Journal. It does take a while to download each pdf as many of the children's accounts have lots of observations. Please be patient I will try to get them all completed by Friday. Please do not add any other observations to your child's account as they will not be included after I have created the pdf. The pdf will be available for you to download for 3 months, but I urge you to do it sooner, so if you encounter any difficulties I can help you with them.
Thanks,
Mrs Curtis
Summer Term Two Week 3
We have had a great time in Class One this week learning about animals that hatch from eggs. Our focus book was called The Egg and in this story a dragon hatched from a large golden egg. We decided to design our own special eggs and think about the animal that might be inside. Some children thought their egg contained a snake or a crocodile, others went for dinosaurs or dragons. The children wrote about the animals in their eggs and played lots of imaginative games involving eggs and dragons. Mrs Curtis had found some very unusual eggs and brought them in to show us. They were very big and one was blue and spotty and the others were gold and bronze. We waited very patiently and then on Thursday they hatched! It was all very exciting! Well done Class One!
Summer Term Two Week One
Welcome back everyone! We have had a lovely week in Class One. On Monday the children had some First Aid training. They all listened really well to Marie and answered lots of questions. They learnt how to put a plaster on safely to stop bleeding and to hold a cold compress to a bump on the head for ten minutes. We also talked about shouting for help and phoning 999. We practised this on old phones, telling the operator where we were and that poor Ted had banged his head and wouldn't wake up. Luckily after we had put him on his side, he did wake up and other than a bit of a headache he was fine.
We also had our Sports afternoon on Tuesday. I have to confess now that although I took lots of lovely photographs of the children having a good time, I was uploading onto Tapestry and I must have forgotten to click save!! Mrs Mckay has saved the day by taking some on the I-pad of her group and a lovely one of us enjoying our lollies at the end so I will share that with you next week. Apologies for my technical issues!
We have started our new topics this week and the children have thoroughly enjoyed our work on dinosaurs. We will carry on with this next week. I have uploaded the planning for this term and our newsletter below so please have a read when you get chance. Many thanks!
Summer Term One Week Five
We have really enjoyed our learning this week- me included. We had such a lovely time on Wednesday out in the beautiful sunshine searching for minibeasts. I'm glad we managed to do it before the huge amount of rain we have had! Due to the heavy rainfall I think it will be best to postpone sports day till after the holiday. We will get there eventually!
Our cress heads now have a full head of hair and our sunflower seedlings are starting to shoot up. Well done children another great week in Class One!
Summer Term One Week Four
Another busy week in Class One. We have planted sunflower seeds and made cress heads so we will be busy looking after them so they grow well. Once we had planted the seeds we wrote instructions to help Mrs Barratt if she decided she wanted to do some planting too. Some children have planted seeds at home as well! Well done children!
Summer Term One Week Three
This week we have been learning more about minibeasts and after reading Superworm we designed our own Superhero Minibeasts which was lots of fun. We have continued to learn about plants and looked at different types of flowering and non-flowering plants and we have also learnt more about 'The Lady with the Lamp' and how Florence Nightingale cared for the soldiers. We had a specialist teacher come into school on Wednesday to teach us some cricket skills which was really exciting. A huge thank you for continuing to post on Tapestry about events happening at home. The children do love to share them with their friends. I have included lots of examples of the lovely ECaT work which is completed at home too. Thank you!
Summer Term One Documents
Please have a read of the documents below. They explain the work we will be covering in class and our newsletter is a reminder of routines and events that are happening this term. Thank you!
Summer Term One Week One
It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school this week in the sunshine. We hope that you all had lovely holidays. The children have been telling us all about the fun they have been having especially after lockdown eased! Apologies for the late ECaT this week. I thought I had posted it during the holidays! Whoops! This week we have started our new Science topic about plants and animals in our woodlands and gardens. We have started with 'The Hungry Caterpillar' as our focus books and have learnt all about the life cycle of a butterfly. So our week one ECaT supports this work. I hope the children enjoy it.
Spring Term Two Week 4
This week was Science Week and Class 1 focused on rockets. Our investigation was all about how we could launch our rockets into the air. We had a go with using balloon power but discovered that they didn't go very high and twirled around instead of shooting up. We decided we needed a much bigger force. So we made a stomp rocket launcher and had a great time watching our rockets shoot up into the air. Lots of other lovely learning too from reading 'Whatever Next' to printing pictures of the moon. Well done Class 1!
Spring Term Two Week 3
It has been wonderful to have all of Class One back together again. We have had a really busy week learning about boats, making them and testing how they float. We have also been working hard on a special surprise for a special someone, but that's a secret so we won't say anymore!
Spring Term Two Week 2
Well done everyone! We have made it to the end of home schooling. We are so pleased that all of our children will be back with us from Monday. Thank you to all the wonderful grown-ups at home who have been teaching all the the tasks we have set. I hope you have enjoyed working with your children, but I'm sure you are looking forward to a rest!
It's been another busy week for both our school and home learners. We have been learning about travelling on a train and we really enjoyed this week's focus story. We enjoyed Maths day on Wednesday and had lots of fun reading stories and playing games to help improve our counting and positional language.
Three sleeps to go everyone! We will see you all on Monday morning. Have a great weekend!
Spring Term Two Week 1
Everyone has quickly got back into work mode this week after our half term holiday. The children in school have returned happy and ready to go and the work we have seen from our home learners has been fantastic. Well done to Zachary and Sam who are our stars this week. So much wonderful reading from Zachary and amazing activities from Sam. Well done boys!
We have had a great week reading the Hundred Decker Bus and completing lots of activities based on it. We went on an imaginative bus ride and saw lots of amazing things. We then wrote about it and have made a beautiful display in our classroom. We can't wait to show it to our friends who are returning soon. Not too many sleeps to go!
For the grown-ups please have a look at our newsletter and medium term plans for this term and if you have any questions or queries, just drop us an email. Have a lovely weekend. Let's hope this beautiful sunshine continues!
Spring Term One Week 6
Hi everyone! We have reached the end of this half term and although it has been different in many ways, the Class One grown-ups are all very proud of you and the wonderful work you have been doing both in school and at home. I hope that everyone takes the week to relax and enjoy being at home without the need to get some work done and upload it for the teachers! A huge thank you to all for the amazing work that the children have produced.
Next term we will be learning about different types of transport and so many of our focus books are linked to vehicles. Our first focus book is The Hundred Decker Bus, which I have recorded below if the children would like to listen to a story. I have also uploaded the ECaT for the first week. However please do not feel this has to be done in half term, it is there purely for the children to access if you wish.
Have a happy half term, take care and stay safe.
Love from Mrs Curtis and Mrs Barratt (and Jake) xxxxx
Spring Term One Week 5
Hi everyone, we have really enjoyed our week in school this week. We have learnt lots about endangered animals and the children have made some fantastic pandas on the creative table after listening to our story of the week. We had a lovely chilled day on Well-being Wednesday and enjoyed relaxing with our mice and making a jar of happiness. We have received lots of photographs and videos from the children learning at home and I have shared some of these in the gallery below. Next week we are going to be learning all about Chinese New Year as this is celebrated next Friday. Our ECaT for next week gives you lots of information, songs and stories to enjoy to learn all about Chinese New Year. I look forward to seeing everyone later at our Google Meet!
Spring Term One Week 4
Hi everyone! Another busy week for Class One both in school and at home. We have all really enjoyed our mouse focus this week and I think our mouse friends have enjoyed learning with us too. Mrs Barratt and I have seen so much work to be proud of so our gallery is bigger than ever this week! Next week we are going to continue learning about looking after our planet with a focus on animals that need our help. Our focus book is 'Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?' which I have uploaded for the children and the ECaT tasks follow this theme. I hope you all enjoyed the Dough Disco video on Tapestry, in class we find it is a great way to start the day and get motivated! Have a relaxing weekend and stay safe.

Spring Term One week 3
Well done everyone, lots of lovely learning has happened again this week. Mrs Barratt will be sending a message through on Tapestry for those children working at home. There are lots of photographs in the gallery this week, so much work to be proud of! Mrs Barratt and I are so pleased to see your mice helping you to learn at home. They are such helpful, busy friends to have!
Spring Term One Week 2
Everyone has been so busy this week! Thank you to all the grown ups at home for persevering with technology and completing the activities with the children at home. Mrs Barratt and I love to see the children looking so happy, learning through play. How fantastic that we had some snow yesterday as well. I hope everyone went outside and built lots of snowmen and made snow angels! There are some photographs in our gallery of some children doing that! In school we have talked about recycling and how that can help clean up our planet. We learnt the new sounds ch and the split digraph a_e with the Year One children and spent lots of time counting to 20 and solving some subtraction problems. I have shared some of the children's work from home and in school. We look at the Tapestry observations in school together and the children love to see what their friends are doing. I will add the learning for next week ready for Monday. Please have a break over the weekend, although the children may enjoy Mrs Barratt and Jake's walk, Mrs Oates' Bucket Time or the ECaT for next week. Take care and stay safe, love from the Class One grown-ups xxxxx
Well Done Everyone!
It's been a very different first week back after Christmas! However all of the grown-ups in Class One are very pleased and proud of our children and how they have all adjusted to their own individual situations! We have children still coming to school and children working very hard at home. I hope everyone has enjoyed the learning this week whether that has been in school or at home. It has been lovely to see work on Tapestry already and we are all getting stuck into our new topics.
I have uploaded some work already for next week, but please no work over the weekend (except maybe a bit of reading) everyone including your grown-ups deserve a break! Mrs Barratt is also working on some fun activities for you to do so I will add them soon, so keep checking our class page throughout the week. Keep safe everyone and have a lovely weekend.
Don't forget PE with Joe at 9.00am Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on his Youtube channel!
Spring Term One
Hi everyone, to begin with we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year!
Following announcements from the government last night, school is now closed to all children apart from key workers' children. We are very sorry that we cannot start the new term all together but we will do all we can to ensure that learning at home is fun and engaging and we are here to help. For the children in EYFS please continue to look at the class page each week to access the remote learning we have planned. Please upload photographs of your children engaging in the suggested play activities, phonics, Maths and ECaT tasks onto Tapestry. We will be able to provide you with feedback and answer any questions easily through this platform. We will upload stories and Bucket time sessions for your children to watch and listen to so they can continue to see us and hear our voices.
For our Year One children we will be uploading all of the remote learning from the National Curriculum onto Google Classroom. This is the remote learning platform that the school is using from Year One upwards. I will send an email with the login details for each child and a guidance sheet to explain how to use it. So far I can say it is quite straightforward as I have managed it so far! If you have any difficulties accessing Google Classroom, please email me and I will try to sort any problems. This will start from January 11th, so please find work for this week uploaded below.
Take care everybody and we will see you all soon.
The USB memory sticks with the recording of Class One’s Winter Wonderland are now available. We have produced one for every child in the class and we understand that Christmas is an expensive time. Therefore, we are asking for a suggested donation of £2 and it is not a condition of you receiving a copy of the children’s work. I will be distributing the memory sticks on Wednesday 16th December. I will be in the FS2 play area where you come to collect the children from 3.10. You may come straight into the playground to collect your memory stick and then you will be able to take your child home. If you have other children in other bubbles you can continue to arrive at the usual time of 3.20 to avoid disrupting the pick-up system. I will ask you to sign that you have received your memory stick. If you wish to make a donation you can do this via Paypal using the instructions below or simply put it into the money pot when you collect the memory stick.
I would like to thank Matt and Ruth for helping us to film the children and for copying the video onto the memory sticks. The finished product has been improved dramatically by their generosity and the time they have given from already very busy schedules!
It is important to us that you can share in your child’s learning with us and although it’s not the same as coming to watch your child perform, I hope that it will provide some special memories to treasure.
Donations can be made via PayPal please using swptfa@gmail.com or the link below. Please use Friends and Family and in the comments box add your child’s name and ‘Nativity’.

Autumn Term Two Week 6
Well done everyone! All the Class One grown-ups are so proud of you all. Our Winter Wonderland filming was amazing. Lots of loud voices, beautiful singing and Makaton signing. It showed just how amazing you all are and how much you have all grown up since September when we first started to learn together as a class. This week we have also been busy making Christmas decorations and cards which we have put into special bags and will keep to one side so they can be brought home safely next Friday.
Autumn Term Two Week 5
A huge thank you to those who have completed the permission form for the filming of our Winter Wonderland on Wednesday. Please see the link below the Winter Wonderland picture if you have not managed to complete the form yet.
We have had lots of Christmas and birthday themed fun this week. The children have made playdough cakes and had pretend birthday teas with their friends. We have played 'Who took the cookie from the cookie jar?' and have loved our new Christmas corner! The children have wrapped presents, made decorations, written Christmas messages and pretended to be elves. Outdoors the children built a sleigh for Santa and the elves and pretended to be the reindeers, delivering presents. Wonderful work everyone!
Class One presents....
A Winter Wonderland
Please Click Here before Tuesday 8th December to complete our Parental Consent Form.
Our Christmas celebration has to look a little bit different this year, but we are very excited to tell you all about ‘A Winter Wonderland.’
Class One will be performing some festive songs in our own magical winter wonderland in the school orchard on Wednesday 9th December.
Unfortunately, we are not able to welcome you as an audience but we will be filming the children and producing copies for you to purchase if you wish.
Please can your child come to school on the 9th dressed in a Christmas jumper and other warm clothes. We will let you know more details of how to order your copy of 'A Winter Wonderland' as soon as possible!Autumn Term Two Week Four
This week we have started to learn the words and songs for our Christmas sing-a-long. As we have been singing outside we think that the cows in the field next to us have really enjoyed listening to us! Please read our Christmas letter to find out about the fun things we have planned and how we are keeping our children safe.
It has been a week filled with little pigs, big bad wolves and building houses this week. The children have continued to build amazing houses and used their imagination to explain who lives there and if they are strong houses or not! The children have completed lots of lovely independent writing about the Big Bad Wolf and we have loved seeing the photographs and videos of puppet shows and our children retelling the story of the Three Little Pigs at home. Thank you!
Autumn Term Two Week 3
Everyone has been so kind in Class One this week! This was our theme for the week in support of National Anti-Bullying Week running alongside our ongoing topic of materials. The children all thought about how they could be kind to each other and we saw lots of sharing, turn taking and using kind words all week. We made a beautiful display of kindness hearts describing the kind behaviour that we all show to others.
We were also busy building houses this week using construction kits, lolly sticks and playdough and our outdoor crates and guttering. We talked about all of the different features our homes needed and the materials that we would use to build them. Thank you for continuing to upload ECaT tasks to Tapestry, we really enjoy sharing the work that our children have completed at home.
Autumn Term Two Week Two
There was lots happening again this week in Class One. We learnt about why people have been wearing poppies this week and the children painted and labelled their own poppies. We enjoyed learning about Diwali and the story of Rama and Sita and the children used craft materials to make their own diva lamp with Miss Goold. Thank you for the money raised on Friday for Children in Need. The children loved the cookies and enjoyed being able to wear their own clothes to school to help to raise money for children who need it.
Autumn Term Two Week One
Well done Class One! We have had a fantastic first week back after half term and have been very busy. The children were full of tales of their half term adventures and thank you so much for sharing these on Tapestry. It really boosts the children to see their photos on our interactive board and their confidence at sharing experiences with the class is wonderful. We have listened to stories about Bonfire Night, completed creative activities, ordered firework numerals, danced outside with our sparklers and learnt about onomatopoeia writing words like pop, bang and hiss to describe the noises fireworks make. Please take a few minutes to look at our medium term plans for this term
and our class newsletter so we can keep you as up to date as possible. Thanks
Hi everyone, I hope you have had a good half term break. Just to remind you that school is closed to children tomorrow as the staff have an Inset day. We will see you all on Tuesday 3rd November!
Half Term Holidays!
Well done everyone! We have completed our first term in school for this academic year and what a busy term it has been. All the Class One grown-ups are very proud of all the wonderful things you have achieved so far. Lots of friendships have been made and everyone has made huge progress with their learning. We have had a great time in school this week with our Halloween theme. We have practised cutting and threading for Funky Fingers, counting eyeballs and spiders and finding the numerals, wonderful writing for our spells and there have been lots of flying wizards and potion making witches in our outdoor area. We have uploaded some activities that you may enjoy doing with your mice over the holidays. Mrs Barratt is going to take Maurice out and about to keep him busy during the holidays. We hope that you all have a very happy half term and stay safe.
Love the Class one Team xxx
Autumn Term One Week 4
Another great week in Class One! The children are all now used to our morning routine and are becoming much more independent putting their belongings away and washing their hands on arrival. We are now able to complete our morning tasks and are enjoying listening to the Numberblocks number formation song each morning. We have had lots of lovely ECaT work and so our board is filling up nicely with photographs of the children's work at home. Thank you for your support with this. It is lovely to listen to the children describing the work they have shared with their grown-ups. We have enjoyed learning about Autumnal weather this week and making wind streamers and watching bubbles blow away! PE was fun in the sunshine on Tuesday and the Year One children were great at switching on the laptop computers and logging on independently. Well done everybody!
Autumn Term One Week 3
The children have continued to come into school well and are now settled into familiar routines. We have had a great week learning about seasons. The children painted a picture of a tree in their favourite season and we had fun on our first 'hunt for signs of autumn.' The children are enjoying their Phonics and Maths sessions and all children now have a reading pack to practise reading at home. Please ensure that these packs are in school each day so we can use every opportunity available to listen to the children read.
A huge thank you to those children who have already completed ECaT tasks. The photographs that you have uploaded onto Tapestry were shared in class, and the children proudly talked about the work they had completed at home. I have printed the photographs so the children's work is on display in the classroom. It is also lovely to see the observations that parents are posting on Tapestry so thank you for that too. If anyone is experiencing problems with logging onto Tapestry, please let me know.
Reminder!
Just to remind those parents who have been dropping children at 9.00 or 9.05, we are now asking for these children to arrive at 8.55. The children are now confident with the morning drop off and we can start our morning learning that bit sooner. Thanks.
Autumn Term One Week Two
This has been our first full week in school and the children have continued to impress us. We are very pleased with how quickly they are learning the new routines and how well they are all settling. This week we have been focusing on Well-being and have enjoyed reading 'The Colour Monster' and discussing things that make us happy. The children have all painted their own colour monster and have described his feelings and why he is feeling that way.
Tapestry is now up and running and so I hope all parents have been able to access this and see personal observations of your children playing with their new friends. This also includes our Year One children as we have extended Tapestry to our Year One children this year. Therefore your accounts from last year are still active.
I appreciate how hard it is not to be able to have a quick chat each morning and if you have any concerns, please do email Vicky or myself or ring the office and we will get back to you.
ccurtis2@southwingfield.derbyshire.sch.uk
vbarratt@southwingfield.derbyshire.sch.uk
Each Friday I will update this page and upload the new ECaT tasks for the week. If you complete any work at home, please upload photographs and an explanation onto Tapestry and then we will encourage the children to share this work with their peers.
Thanks!
Well Done Class One!
All the grown ups in Class One are so proud of our new children and our returning Year One children. Everyone has been very brave and so kind to each other! We have played beautifully and made lots of new friends. We worked hard to complete our Take One Picture project and this is on display in our classroom. Thank you for all your lovely smiles and hard work.
Welcome to Class One!
Hi all, we are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Class One on Thursday. If it's your first day at school or your first day back in a very long time, please don't worry we will have lots of fun together. To help you get ready I have made a powerpoint presentation to show you some photographs of the classroom and what it looks like in school.
Don't forget to bring your mice. We can't wait to meet them all and hear about the adventures you have had over the Summer!
