Derbyshire County Council Catering Service launched the Food Explorer campaign in October 2021 with our Autumn/Winter 21-22 menu. This menu had lots of new dishes for Food Explorers to try and it was amazing to see so many pupils discover their new favourite vegetable during the Great British Roast Dinner Day.
The new Spring/Summer menu is made up of firm favourites which we know Food Explorers enjoy and theme days that invite them to discover new flavours, ask questions about the food on their plate and learn how a balanced diet can make us feel good.
Most of our schools will offer two choices of a Food Explorer hot main meal (including a vegetarian or vegan option) and a jacket potato or sandwich alternative every day. Our menus are on a three week cycle and change every six months; after the Easter holidays to our Spring/Summer menu and after October half-term to our Autumn/Winter menu. Every Food Explorer can select their choice of main meal, with vegetables, salad, bread and drinking water freely available. For dessert, fresh fruit is freely available and organic fruit yoghurt is offered as an alternative to the homemade dessert of the day. Every dessert is suitable for vegetarian explorers.
If you would like to request a vegan Food Explorer menu please speak with your Catering Supervisor who can provide this.
Our team is experienced in providing menus to suit medical requirements, if your child requires a medical diet please click here for more information.
You’ll be pleased to hear that our menus exceed Government nutritional standards and are award winning. In fact, all of our primary sites have been accredited the Silver Food for Life Served Here award which means we use high quality, seasonal and locally sourced produce. If you’d like to find out more about what the Food for Life Served Here award means please visit: https://www.foodforlife.org.uk/about-us/food-for-life-served-here
The meal price for a Primary school child is £2.30 and includes their main meal, dessert, drinks, as many veggies and as much salad and fruit that they would like. (Price correct from September 2022).
In some instances our Catering Teams in school may have to amend the menu at short notice, for example if there is an issue with a food delivery. However, our procurement and operational teams works hard to keep this to a minimum.
Currently children in Key Stage 1 (Reception, Year 1 & 2) qualify for Universal Free School Meals. Please note that Universal Free School Meals end when your child enters Key Stage 2 (year 3 upwards) and the recommended daily meal price of £2.30 will apply, unless you are eligible for Free School Meals. School dinners taken will be uploaded onto our SchoolMoney payment system the following week where you can pay any money owed, or pay for dinners in advance.
**The governors of South Wingfield Primary have agreed a maximum debt of £20.00. If the debt is not paid parents/carers must supply a packed lunch for their child/ren. Prompt payment on a weekly/upfront basis is appreciated.**
